EPA Designates High and Low Priority Chemicals as Part of Toxic Substance Evaluation

Jan 9, 2020 | Environmental

Forty more chemical substances have been designated as high or low priority for risk evaluation by the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA has proposed twenty of the substances to be low-priority, and the other twenty to be high-priority, as defined under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).

The substances designated as high-priority will now undergo evaluation to determine their level of risk of use from both an environmental and public health perspective. As part of the evaluative process, the EPA is seeking public comment to gather as much information as possible about hazards related to production and exposure that could be considered an “unreasonable risk” to those affected. Among the substances being evaluated are formaldehyde, four flame retardants, and several chlorinated solvents.

If the EPA proceeds through the risk evaluation process and determines that risk management is necessary, it will likely look to impose restrictions on the manufacture, use, and disposal of these high-priority substances.
