Feb 2, 2018 | Community Involvement

We would like to congratulate Associate Attorney Seta Eskanian on being elected Secretary of the Armenian International Women’s Association New England Affiliate. Ms. Eskanian was encouraged to join the organization’s mission and become part of an international network because of its commitment to empowering women worldwide. Ms. Eskanian proudly volunteers her time to help advance the social, economic and personal well-being of women. Most recently, she was actively involved as a member of the Planning Committee for the organization’s 25th Anniversary Leadership Conference, which hosted 35 speakers who shared their professional experiences and knowledge, including prominent speakers Selina Dogan, an Armenian female member of the Turkish Parliament, and Justice Wolohojian, the highest ranking Armenian judge in Massachusetts. The event hosted 300 guests from around the world, with two days of panel discussions, networking activities, social hours and a formal gala.

AIWA International, the umbrella organization, has five affiliates in New England, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and New Jersey. Ms. Eskanian joins the New England Executive Committee’s President, Zela Astarjian, Vice President, Gayane Karen Merguerian, Treasurer, Becca Kharajian Abruzzese, and member-at-large, Alisa Stepanian. The Executive Committee is planning a number of charitable events, workshops, social hours and networking opportunities. Their next event is the Budgeting and Credit Scores 101 workshop, which will take place on Tuesday, February, 13, 2018 from 6:30-8:30PM at the Watertown Public Library and is free and open to the public. The AIWA New England group partnered with the CFA Society Boston for this event, which is a non-profit professional society comprised of investment professionals that volunteer their time to provide open forums on financial topics.

AIWA International is a founding funder of the Women’s Support Center (WSC) in Yerevan, Armenia – a mission to help women dealing with domestic abuse by providing safe, hidden shelters, counseling services, educational and legal assistance. WSC also advocates for legislation for women’s political and economic rights. AIWA’s 2017 fundraising has helped open a second hidden shelter, due to overflow needs. AIWA also supports and sponsors the American University of Armenia’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Program (WEP), which is a business training program in Armenia dedicated to helping women break stereotypes, create equal opportunities in the work place and advance their business skills. AIWA hosts International Conferences, hosts a panel discussion each year at the United Nation for the Commission on the Status of Women, publishes books, provides scholarship opportunities for Armenian women working towards developing their futures, and has supported many members with their professions.
